You only get one chance to make a first impression with a label or blog, so the way that to introduce yourself, and your music is very important. Demo submission email’s often receive dozens of submissions a day from eager producers around the globe, and there are several important factors to keep in mind when submitting one yourself.
Properly showcase your BEST material
You get one change to make your first impression upon someone. Somebody reviewing demos, for a blog or for a record label, is listening to yours out of dozens, or hundreds. It’s best to make sure that whatever you submit is your absolute best material, properly tagged, either on a clean (private, more on that later) soundcloud link, or mp3 id3 tag, meaning the artist, album, and song title. It’s good to put a link back to your website in the comments of a track, as well.
Consider where you send your demo
Pick and choose who you send your demos to. If you’re sending something to a label for release, don’t blow it up on your soundcloud and send it to a dozen other labels at the same time. A label will often want to do their own release of the album/song instead of having it already been pushed through other sources. You want to stick with blogs that write about music similar to your demo, so don’t use the shotgun approach here, as it’s very obvious and feels impersonal.
